School Counseling Informed Notification

Introduction of Services

Christ the King Catholic School is committed to providing quality education to its students.  In effort to achieve this goal, school staff or parents/guardians may refer students for counseling, or students may request counseling.  The aim of school counseling services is to help students have more effective education and socialization within the school community.  

 

Background

Christ the King Catholic School’s counselor is Ms. Doella Leigh Gilmer.  She has a Bachelor of Science in psychology from Mississippi State University, Starkville, MS, a Master of Marriage and Family Therapy and has completed Ph. D. course work in counseling psychology from Trevecca Nazarene University, Nashville, TN.  Ms. Gilmer has also taught psychology and counseling classes at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. 

 

Provisions of Services 

Services include intake assessment, short-term individual counseling, crisis intervention, psycho-education, and referrals as needed.

 

School counseling services are aimed at the more effective education and socialization of students within the school community. These services are not intended for a substitute for psychological counseling, diagnosis, or medication, which are not the responsibility of the school.  The school counselor will consult with the parent/ guardian to determine if additional or different services are necessary.

 

Confidentiality 

Counseling is based on a trusting relationship between the counselor and counselee.  The school counselor will work with parents/guardians and teachers or administrators, so that we may better help the child as a team.

 

Under the following circumstance, the school counselor is required by law to report information.

  1. Presenting information about hurting/harming self or others.

  2. Evidence or disclosure of abuse (physical, emotional, sexual) or neglect.

  3. Threats to school security.

  4. If counseling records are court ordered.
